Troubleshoot Tuesdays:

January 10, 2012

One of our valued customers, Victor, wrote in to let us know of a problem he was able to correct by changing his router settings.

Victor wrote…

“I had some hard time trying to figure out why the VPN connection dropped so often. It turned out to be the MTU.  By default,
it’s set to Auto, I just changed it to 1400 and now the VPN connection has been up for days. Maybe pre-setting a specified MTU value can improve the performance for some user setups.”

DD-wrt routers are set to Auto for MTU.  Routers featuring the Sabai OS are set to 1500.  For most internet connections, the router will not work unless the MTU is set to 15oo, the max MTU.  Each internet connection is different, so if you are experiencing VPN drop off, try adjusting your MTU down.

If you continue to experience a drop off in your VPN connection after adjusting MTU, contact us at support@sabaitechnology.com.

Troubleshoot Tuesday: It’s as easy as 1-2-3

December 27, 2011

For Troubleshoot Tuesdays this week, we will be discussing what happens when you press the dreaded RED reset button on a dd-wrt router.

Many of you know that when the red reset button has been pressed, the router connection ceases. On a dd-wrt router, pressing the reset button erases the operating system.  Often when the router will not connect to VPN, customers will press the reset button.  We always recommend pressing the reset button as a last resort.  Sometimes it is necessary but many times other steps can be taken to re-establish a VPN connection.

If you do happen to press the reset button, here are the steps you will take to reload the dd-wrt configuration onto your router.  It’s as easy as 1-2-3:

1. Disconnect and reconnect your computer to the Sabai dd-wrt router. Type in the address bar 192.168.1.1

2. Enter log in information. Click on Administration/Backup tab and browse to the backup configuration file on the CD (included with your router purchase)

3. Click the Restore button at the bottom of the page. After your router reboots, you will need to re-enter your StrongVPN account information into the router.

You should now have a VPN connection!

If you have trouble reloading the dd-wrt configuration or cannot find your backup disc, please contact us at support@sabaitechnology.com.

Troubleshoot Tuesdays: Give your router a break.

December 13, 2011

For Troubleshoot Tuesdays this week, we are going to keep it simple.  Sometimes your router will work for extended periods of time and will not have any problems. Then…all of the sudden…it starts acting up.  Isn’t that frustrating?

Many times, it is as simple as unplugging the router.  Waiting 1 full minute. Then, plugging it back in.  Unfortunately, sometimes our routers need a break.

If your router continues to cause issues, contact us at support@sabaitechnology.com.

Sabai Technology Customer Spotlight: Ecuador.

November 14, 2011

Larry was researching how to get a U.S. IP address from a different country and found Sabai Technology through a Google search.  He simply wanted the ability to access all Internet Services as if he was in the US but wanted a solution that would support all of his devices: iPad, iPhone, Apple TV etc. on one VPN account.  Larry purchased the Linksys E3000 router and, in the future, plans to add two additional routers with antennas to increase the VPN performance in his home.

Larry says, “I purchased my router which was configured and delivered promptly. Upon receiving it, I discovered that my ISP which was the local electric company at the time could not provide enough bandwidth to stream video or even effectively browse the Internet. A support call with Sabai quickly confirmed that and helped me to easily prove to the ISP that they could not meet their contractual bandwidth assurances and they released me from my contract. I then obtained DSL service from the local phone company and the bandwidth in Ecuador was well beyond the contractual commitment. However, when I went through StrongVPN, I could not get sufficient bandwidth to do any streaming or most other things like browsing, etc. I called Sabai and spoke to William, he connected to my computer remotely and made use of both my local connection and StrongVPN connection to reconfigure things that got me to fantastic bandwidth on another StrongVPN server.

I am very happy with Sabai and am most comfortable knowing that they are there ready, willing and able to support me whenever I need it. Sabai takes technical support to unexpected, but most welcome levels. It might not be instantaneous, but they will get back to you. Ruth and William have been remarkable in helping me get the best possible performance and have been extremely patient and persistent in doing so. This level of support and Customer Service is beyond any expectation anyone could ever have.”

Thanks for being in our customer spotlight, Larry!

Troubleshoot Tuesday: 4 simple steps to reconnecting your VPN.

November 8, 2011

Your VPN tunnel can lose connectivity for various reasons.  Here are 4 simple steps you can try to resume a VPN connection:

1. Power down the modem, your primary router and the Sabai router. Unplug all items from power and wait a full minute.  After you have waited a full minute, begin plugging each back in starting with the modem, then primary router and finally the Sabai router. Once you have done this, wait another 5 minutes and check your connection again.

2. If you still do not have the VPN IP address, log into your StrongVPN account and check the status of your account.

3. If nothing is going on with your StrongVPN account, try changing servers to see if this will solve the problem.

4. Still no connection?  Contact us at support@sabaitechnology.com and we can help you solve your VPN connection issue.

Troubleshoot Tuesdays: Slow Speed

October 18, 2011

Having issues with speed?  There are a few things you can try to resolve the problem on your own.

When you are experiencing a slow down in your VPN speed, a number of things could be contributing factors.  We have noticed that older versions of certain web browsers can disrupt speed tests, so make sure that your internet browser is updated to the latest version. Check your Java to make sure it is also updated. Similar to the outdated web browser, if the updates on Java are not completed, speed tests can be affected.  Once you have verified that your programs are up-to-date, you can begin the speed tests.

Performing a few speed tests can help you find the fastest server for your location and help you understand what you can expect from your VPN.

Follow these simple steps:

1. Disconnect from your VPN tunnel so you are on your local internet connection.  Once on your local connection, perform a Speed test on speedtest.net.

2. Next, click on the New Server button and drag the green square on the world map over to the location of the VPN server you are using (NY, San Francisco, London, etc.). Mouse over each dot until you find the correct city and click it to perform a speed test.  This will give you the best example of uninhibited internet access to that location. Your VPN will be slower than this speed because of encryption.

3. You can repeat the test to different server locations that are included in your StrongVPN plan and use the one that gives you the best speed. Once you have determined which is best, log onto your StrongVPN account and switch to a server in that area.

4. Enter the new server information into your Sabai Technology router by following the instructions included with your shipment.

If you are unable to resolve you speed issues with these tests, contact us at support@sabaitechnology.com.
